Signs Of Burnout

burnout
If you have been involved in any type of leadership for any amount of time you know what the term burnout means. So many times we begin to experience the beginning stages of burnout and we miss it until we are into it pretty deep. So over the next couple of postings I want to look at the signs of burnout and the cure for burnout.

A really good example of burnout in the Bible can be found in I Kings 19 and the story of Elijah.

I am not going to go into the details of the story - you can read that. Here are some signs of burnout:

1. We depreciate our worth. We compare ourselves to others and what we expect our lives to be. Once you begin to compare yourself to others you begin to destroy your worth and your accomplishments. As this occurs you begin to lose sight of what you have truly accomplished and the only thing you can see is what you have failed at or what you think you have failed at. As this happens you begin to slide into the next phrase of burnout.

2. We devalue our work. We must remember that we are only responsible for obedience. You will begin to place the total result of your life’s work on your shoulders. You must remember that you are only responsible for what you do.

3. We exaggerate our problems. We make them bigger than they really are. Have you ever made things bigger than they really are? We all have done this. Every single one of us. My mom use to say you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. When we get to this place, we have lost proper vision and we are not seeing correctly. When that happens it’s easy to fall into the next phrase.

4. We abdicate our dreams. When we stop dreaming we die inside. We quit, or stop, caring or just begin to go through the routine of life. I guess this is one of the worst places to be. You have become miserable. No vision will cause the people to perish. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. This is a really bad place to be.

Do you find yourself feeling burned out? What are you doing about it? What have you done about it?
In the next article I will talk about the cure for burnout.

There is help. You can make it out of burnout and get back on track again.
